Water Bore Drilling in Hanwood

South and west of Hanwood the watertable has been recorded close to the surface, in an irrigation district whose groundwater a NSW Department of Primary Industries report calls highly saline. A bore here begins as a water-quality question, not a depth target.

Water Bore Drilling around Hanwood

The report is the Department's economic analysis of farming systems in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, published in May 2005. In 2005 it said the highest watertables were less than 1 m from the surface near Murrami, Widgelli/Bilbul, and south and west of Hanwood, and that the groundwater in the irrigation area in general is highly saline. It puts the cause down largely to irrigation practices: "Largely because of irrigation practices, the groundwatertables in many locations are now close to the surface." That is a 2005 reading for a wide area, not a measurement at a Hanwood property, and it is more than a year old.

What follows for a household or stock bore is our reasoning, not the report's. Water met close to the surface and called saline means a test of the water before it goes near a kitchen tap or a vegetable bed, and a careful finish where the casing meets the ground. Ask the provider what the bore head will be sealed against and who will take the sample.

Permits and Griffith City Council rules

The approval to construct a bore is the NSW Department's, shared with WaterNSW: it says you need a water supply work approval to construct a groundwater bore, household bores included. This site has not read a Griffith City Council rule for bores, so ask the Council whether it adds anything.
